MOKOLEA LAVA POOLSThis photo was taken by Patrick Smith, and is of a lava ledge 6 metres above the sea; the incoming wave is about twice that height. Mōkōlea Rock is an islet in Kailua Bay, along the windward coast of Oʻahu in Hawaiʻi. The islet is also known as “Birdshit Island” to the locals, as it is a seabird sanctuary and its black lava rock surface is nearly white from all the droppings.
The caves which cut into its foundations are home to much lobster, while outside the pukas cauliflower coral and antler corals thrive. Whitetips have also been seen around here, as well as parrot and unicorn fish, and ulua and opelu.Mōkōlea is part of the windward rim of the Kawainui volcanic caldera.-TELPhoto details: Canon 5D; Canon 17-40L @ 27; 0.6-second exposure @F14 ; LEE soft ND grad (100x150mm) 0.9 + 0.6; Lee foundation kit filter holder with Lee 77mm adapter ring; ISO 50. http://www.flickr.com/photos/7765891@N08/3412288518/http://www.hawaiiscubadiving.com/oahu/dive-sites/mokolea.html
