Well everything I have ever come across about sirens or mermaids suggest people may have mistaken animals like sea cows for sires and mermaids as well as the fact that when people drew maps and they included parts of the Earth that weren’t yet explored they’d draw sea serpents, sirens, mermaids and the like to take up that space. D: Sorry, I couldn’t help more, I can look it up more though. They were also just mythological creatures used to explain away ship wrecks or mysterious deaths. While many creatures have a religious and cultural origin, many are used to persecute, worship or explain away people or events
