Calcite with Chalcopyrite from China
A 10cm across Calcite with nicely accented with a sprays of lustrous Chalcopyrite crystals from the Daye Mine, Daye Co., Hubei Province in China. A Skarn-type iron-copper deposit. The former government-owned copper mine is now privately held and worked for wollastonite.
From a mineralogical point of view, Daye is the home of a 3000 year old bronze culture and has many mines active and inactive. On the edge of the big Tonglüshan open pit copper mine is the Tonglüshan archaeological mining museum with 2000 m of ancient mine working exposed inside the building. In the city are a number of mineral dealers and small lapidary factories using mostly local materials to make a variety of lapidary objects.
